Is a psychotherapist also known as a psychiatrist?
5 Comments→Rachael (: asked:
I was researching psychiatry, and a site said that a psychotherapist is a “psychiatric specialty” So does that mean that if I become a psychotherapist that I’ll also be referred to as a psychiatrist? I’m not sure why, but this is confusing me. I’m 15 and deciding on a major. I go to a school where we have to know what we want to be because we get college education and high school education all at the same time. So don’t say that I’m too young to worry about it!No related posts.

Well, I believe that a psychotherapist is one type of psychiatrist. So, yes, if you were a psychotherapist, then you would also be classified as a psychiatrist; but there are other kinds of psychiatrists.
In other words, psychotherapy is one school of thought/practice within the profession of psychiatry.
Hope this helps. I’ve attached some more links for your benefit

A psychotherapist is someone who does psychotherapy. Both psychologists and psychiatrists use psychotherapy as a specialty. But someone can also specialize in psychotherapy only and be called a psychotherapist. Check this link, it might help:

no im pretty sure they are different. i think psychotherepists do more of like group therapy with their patients, and psychiatrists can prescribe medicines to their patients *thats why you have to go to school for at least 8 years to do that*
yeah they are def different. you can probably be a psychotherapist with a psychiatric specialty, and be able to prescribe medicine, and have gone to school for a very long time to do so, but thats about it.
if youre a psychotherapist you’ll be referred to as a psychotherapist..and if youre a psychiatrist you’ll be referred to as such but you’ll tack on “Dr.” before your name:)
if you really want to do one of those go for the psychiatrist. you’ll be making really really good money compared to a psychotherapist
even though….i am positive you’ll change your mind about what you want to be NUMEROUS times before you graduate college hahah, believe me. i used to want to be a psychiatrist actually, then it was journalism. then marketing, and now i’m in college majoring in marketing, and i’m thinking about changing my major. hahah
good luck!!!

Psychiatrists are also full medical doctors and can prescribe medications.
Psychotherapists, psychoanalysists, therapists, counselors, etc. can’t prescribe meds. just handle the counseling end of things.
