Psychotherapists are generally Clinical Psychologists, trained in providing therapy. Generally speaking, they are accredited by the APA in the U.S or the CPA in Canada (I don’t know where you are from). Most commonly their education involves a Ph.D. in Clinical psychology (usually 4 years with an additional 5th year of practicums). In the states there are also Psy. D. programs, which are accredited but do not have the research component of the Ph.D.
These programs are generally very competitive and require a bachelor’s degree in a social science or a related area.
You can also for instance have a M.A. in psychology, take the required courses, do your practicum time and then apply to APA/CPA to become accredited. This bypasses the Ph.D. completely. -
